Prepared For the Unexpected

5/14/2020 (Permalink)

While no one can really be fully prepared when an emergency happens or disaster strikes, there are proactive steps you can take to help you, your family, and your business be as prepared as possible in the case of an emergency.

First steps

Communication as a first step can make a huge difference in the stress that can come when a disaster hits. Sitting down with friends, family, your household or co-workers and talking through the details of a plan is a good start to making sure everyone is on the same page. Some ideas to consider discussing could be

  • What are our current ways of receiving warnings and alerts? How will we continue to receive these warnings after a disaster or emergency?
  • What is our plan for shelter in case anything should happen to our home?
  • Is everyone clear on an evacuation route?
  • What is our plan as a family/household or business for communication?

Assess Your Specific Needs

This can be daunting but in case of an emergency, it is always best to be prepared than caught even more so off guard. If there are family members, household members, or co-workers that have certain dietary or medical needs make sure you have that necessary food or medicine on hand. If your household has pets, make sure you know the plan for them as well in the case of an emergency. Make sure you either have what they need or have a plan to get them into temporary care.

Most Importantly

In case of an emergency or disaster, make sure that above all, you, your family, your household, or your business are somewhere safe. Whether it’s a fire, flood, or earthquake, make sure to contact emergency services as soon as possible and do not try to handle the situation on your own.
